What) Tom Lakenen's little yard art project got so out of hand that he opened an enormous free sculpture garden featuring his fantastical critters! Set amidst the pines just across the street from the Lake Superior beach, Lakenland features roughly eighty brightly painted metal sculptures, which range from a rebar gator to space creatures to occasional political pieces. The garden is completely free, and can be explored on foot or from the car. (1)

Where) Just East of town on Highway 28, directly opposite Shot Point Road on the south side of the highway.

Why) I kind of went overboard with outdoor sculptures on the Florida trip.  This time I decided to put a sculpture on the list if I saw it first and thought it looked worthwhile.  Take a look at the sculptures I liked at Lakenland and see if you would have put it on your list.

The sign at the entrance was a work of art in itself.

Almost all of the sculptures were original in the derogatory sense.

In my mind this means that what the sculptures lack in artistic merit or craftsmanship ...

... they make up for with energy and inventiveness.

I don't know how many people like this sort of thing but ...

... we were there for an hour on a cool Saturday morning and we saw at least 6 other people walking around.

If the sculptures got Pam to walk around for an hour in the cool spring weather then they must have some merit.

Would your opinion of me change if I told you that this was my favourite sculpture at Lakenland?

I enjoyed the visit and would return if I ever drive this way again.
