What) These mighty haymakers by sculptor Leonard McMurray stand 60 feet high and weigh 30 tons making them the largest bronze sculpture in the world. One would like to imagine that they are strong, American hands, but evangelist Oral Roberts outsourced their casting to Juarez, Mexico in 1980.

The hands were originally called "The Healing Hands" and they stood in front of Oral's "City of Faith," a medical center devoted to faith healing. But the City of Faith wound up on the short end of a series of lawsuits and declared bankruptcy in 1989. The hands were then moved to the entrance drive of the university. (1)

    Where) 7777 South Lewis Avenue

Why) Visting Oral Roberts University has been on my wish list for a while now so it seemed natural and appropriate to stop in and see the hands before touring the university.

This is the classic view of the hands but there is something about them that I find captivating from just about every angle.

I don't know if Pam shares that opinion as she seemed more interested in reading the plaques at the base.

I do know that I like the detail on the thumbs and I wish that I had ...

... taken this picture showing the detail of the veins on the hand contrasting with the veins in the clouds. (2)

The hands also inspired me to take an artistic photo and I was surprised to see that ...

... my best shot was not that much worse then my favourite image from the internet. (3)
