What) The Salt Lake Temple is the largest and best-known of more than 130 temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was the sixth temple completed by the church, requiring 40 years to complete, and the fourth operating temple built since the Mormon exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois.

The Salt Lake Temple is the centerpiece of the 10-acre Temple Square. Like other LDS temples it is considered sacred by the church and its members and a temple recommend is required to enter, so there are no public tours. The temple grounds are open to the public and are a popular tourist attraction.  Due to its location at LDS Church headquarters and its historical significance, it is patronized by Latter-day Saints from many parts of the world. The Salt Lake Temple is also the location of the weekly meetings of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. As such, there are special meeting rooms in the building for these purposes, including the Holy of Holies, which are not present in other temples.

Temple Square also includes the historic Tabernacle, home of the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The Family History Library, the largest genealogical library in the world, is located just west of Temple Square. It is run by the Church and is open to the public and free of charge. (1)

Why) Back in my days as a draftsman at a structural engineering company, I used to prepare architectural collages to use as backgrounds for my work computer. I created 15 of them in total but the one about the Salt Lake Temple was my first so I have always thought I should visit the place if I ever got the chance.

This is the collage I mentioned. Today I am not sure what was special enough about it to make it the start of a series.

Anyway, you will be able to tell from the quality of these pictures that I did not take them. (2)

We actually drove down the confusingly named West North Temple Street but we did not stop in. (3) Why? Well, ...

... the skies were grey and a blizzard was coming but the main reason was that the abnormally wide streets and surprisingly (4) ...

... depressing architecture in the area were doing something to kill my Buckys spirit. (4)
Looking at these wonderful pictures has rekindled my desire to visit the place but at the time using 30 minutes seemed wasteful.
