What) The Confederation Bridge is a bridge spanning the Abegweit Passage of Northumberland Strait. It was commonly referred to as the "Fixed Link" by residents of Prince Edward Island prior to its official naming. Construction took place from the autumn of 1993 to the spring of 1997, costing $1.3 billion. The 8 mile long bridge opened in 1997.

It is a multi-span post-tensioned concrete box girder structure. Most of the curved bridge is 131 feet above water, and it contains a 197 foot high navigation span to permit ship traffic. The bridge rests on 62 piers, of which the 44 main piers are 820 feet apart. The bridge is 36 feet wide. The speed limit on the bridge is 80 kilometres per hour. The $44.25 toll is paid only when exiting the island. Currently it is, by far, the most expensive toll bridge in North America. (1)

Where) There are signs all over the place as it is one of only two ways to get to Prince Edward Island.

Why) I had initially planned to take the ferry to the island and the bridge off but I misread the ferry schedule so we had to take the bridge both ways.  Neither of us minded much as we both have a fondness for impressive bridges.(1,2,3,4,5,6)

From the passenger seat of the Jeep the bridge was not very photogenic.  In many ways this simple shot was the best one I took.

For most of the drive this was about all that you could see. The only "exciting" part was the ...

... navigation span but I know that was just the contrast talking.  Anyway, this presented me with a problem as my neighbor had ...

... requested a bridge postcard and there weren't many to choose from.  Eventually I had to give up on finding one and make my own.

When I got home and looked on the internet this was the best bridge shot that I could find although there were ... (2)

... a few other nice pictures but they would have looked nice regardless of whether or not the bridge was a part of them. (3)
