What) Next door to Agawa Indian Crafts, you'll find The Canadian Carver. Here's where we stock the shelves with Canadian-made wood carvings, woodcraft, paintings, lithographs and home décor for your cottage and home. We have hand painted traditional drums and some breath-taking taxidermy.

Our store is located on Pancake Bay, named many years ago by fur traders who often made their last stop here before a final day of paddling to Sault St. Marie. It was on the shores of this bay that they used the last of their supplies to make a meal of pancakes, knowing that fresher food and a rest were only one more day away. (1)

Where) It's on the only highway and there are lots of signs.  1-800-656-9676

Why) This is the store in Pancake Bay that I wanted to stop in at.  When I drove through in 2004, I was very impressed by the quality and selection of their wood carvings and I ended up purchasing two of them as gifts.  I was hoping for a similar experience this time.

This is the store that I was looking forward to exploring.  I managed to find a very similar carving to what I purchased last time but ...

... I didn't like it nearly as much.  On the left you can see the one I bought then and on the right is the one that was in the store now.

To a lesser degree I felt the same way about the statue I bought last time (left) compared to the one the store had this time (right).

There were also new carvings that I got to admire.  This one was very large and way out of my price range but ...

... this one by Robert Roy was selling for $315 and almost made its way home with me.

Pam would have purchased a carving if it had captured the essence of a horse but this one by G. Gaud didn't quite do it.

This stuffed dog looked perfectly real but although we marveled at it we didn't buy one
.
In fact, neither of us bought anything which is something I wouldn't have predicted.

Actually, I will probably end up ordering this small urn if I can think of something suitable to put in it.
