What) Chris Murray has been practicing landscape photography for more than 15 years. During that time he has also worked as a geologist, earning a B.S. in geology from SUNY Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. Chris continues to work part time as a geological consultant while devoting the rest of his time to photography.

His interest in photographing landscapes is derived mainly from his love of the natural world, the same love that led Chris to choose geology as a profession. "For me, the appeal of photography lies in the blending of the technical and the artistic. As a scientist, I am naturally drawn to the technical aspects of photography: decisions regarding filters, shutter speed, aperture, and so on," said Chris. "The skills I have learned as a scientist, the attention to detail and careful observation, have also helped me immensely as an artist." Chris resides in Syracuse but you can find him online at www.chrismurrayphotography.com (page 39)

Where) I picked up the 2012 edition of Life in the Finger Lakes magazine at a local motel.

Why) The cover image grabbed my attention and I was pleased to discover that there were other beautiful images inside.

This is the cover I mentioned.  On our drive we also had fun trying to pronounce and figure out the meaning of the town name Skaneateles.

Sunset Over Skaneateles Lake, Spafford from pages 36-37

Cascades Along Lick Brook, Sweedler Preserve, Ithaca. Even though this image was on page 38 of the magazine I managed to find a slightly crisper version on Chris's website. (2)  While I was there, I started to browse his image galleries and discovered ...

... a waterfall picture that I prefer called Lick Brook #3 (3) as well as ...

This image in the same section called Lavender Sunrise, Skaneateles Lake. (4)  Of course that got me looking at the ...

... flower section and this one called Anemone. (5)  Obviously, there are more beautiful images on his website to discover for yourself.
