What) In the three-story glass atrium at Delorme headquarters, a map software company, there is a 41 foot diameter slowly rotating Earth globe nicknamed Eartha. Created in 1998, the enormous structure was designed as a scale model. With the scale of 1:1,000,000 or approximately one inch equaling 16 miles, Eartha takes 18 leisurely minutes to make a complete cycle. Visitors can marvel at DeLorme's creation from three different observation levels. (1)

Where) 2 DeLorme Drive   Free   The map store is open daily from 9:30am to 6pm but Eartha is visible 24/7.    1-207-846-7100

Why) Although we had just driven through a long stretch of Buckyless Maine and probably would have stopped anywhere, I would have put Eartha on the list wherever she happened to be.

This sign sits at the entrance to the parking lot but I didn't notice it until we were driving away.

I was so excited and enthusiastic that I forgot to take this picture of the the building's exterior. (2)

I did take a few pictures of the globe from the different levels but the real joy in this Buckys lies in watching and anticipating and ...

... discovering the various map features as they slowly rotate into view.  Pictures can't capture this.  You must be there yourself. (3)
