What) The M.V. Coho provides a classic ship experience linking Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island with Port Angeles, Washington on the scenic Olympic Peninsula.  Our passenger and vehicle ferry provides year round daily service. Enjoy this scenic 90 minute passage as part of your next vacation. (1)

    Where) March 5 to 19, 2010  8:20AM  10:30AM  2:00PM  4:00PM   Passengers $14.50  Vehicle & Driver $53.00

Why) It sounds like this should be a nice pleasant scenic Buckys but the interesting part of this one was the artifacts I found in the gift shop and not the boat ride itself.

What) Some people like pets. Frogs, turtles, dogs, cats, guineea pigs, they're all pets. Frogs are very nice, I personally like them, but it's the maintenance that keeps me from getting any. You have to change the water once in a while if you don't want a swamp smell all over your house. Normal frogs are very likely to die if not fed at least once a day. If you like frogs but think you might forget or have no time to feed them, then the Frog-O-Sphere is definitely for you.

It is a self-contained and self-cleaning ecosystem with two aquatic mini frogs, a snail, living gravel and a bamboo plant. Just enjoy watching the little fellows as they swim and play care free. You only have to feed them two times a week, two pellets each. Forget about the hassle of cleaning the water of remaining food and algae. The snail is the janitor that cleans the aquarium while feeding itself.

If another reason you won't keep frogs is that you don't want to hurt them, know that the mini aquatic frogs are of the African Dwarf species, whose members don't grow. The provided tank will be more than enough for them as long as they live. Sadly they'll only live up to four years. For the price of $39.95 you get all of that and a bonus 1-year food supply. (3)

What) I admit that I was fascinated by these little frogs that were supposed to be in a self-contained ecosystem. The truth, however, was much different.  Not only were these frogs overpriced, at $40 for the whole set, but they were placed into a situation where they were starving and mistreated. PETA exaggerates the whole thing quite a bit. The real problem is that African Dwarf frogs are carnivores, that automatically means that this ecosystem cannot be self-sustaining. If the frogs are hungry enough then they will eat the snail. The snail cannot handle the build-up that is accumulating in the tank by itself. The tanks needs to be cleaned once a week, at least. Furthermore, do not follow the directions about feeding that come with the Frog-O-Sphere. These frogs need to be feed every other day! Also, you are better off feeding these frogs blood worms than pellets. (4)

Why) I spent a fair bit of time staring at the frog display in the gift shop next to the M.V. Coho terminal.  I didn't believe that the claims could be possible but it sure looked neat if you turned off the thinking part of your mind.

The Frog - o - Sphere they were selling (scroll up to read about it) was not this nice. (5)

I did end up purchasing this cool 3-D bookmark called Tiger Trouble by Royce B. McClure (6) but ...

... I probably would have purchased Royce's Panther bookmark if it had been stocked. (7)

I saw this heart (ask my mother about it) in the ferry gift shop but it was too expensive so I couldn't buy it.
