What) The Mystery Spot is a gravitational anomaly located in the redwood forests just outside of Santa Cruz, California. It is a circular area of effect around 150 feet (46 meters) in diameter. Within the Mystery Spot you will be stunned as your perceptions of the laws of physics and gravity are questioned. But don't take our word for it, come and decide for yourself.

The Mystery Spot was discovered in 1939 by a group of surveyors and opened to the public in 1940. (1) Phenomena demonstrated by the tour guides include two people standing on opposite sides of a level surface who appear to change height as they switch positions and a ball that appears to roll up a plank. Additional claims of mystery are the growth patterns of trees and their branches within the Mystery Spot, the lack of animals such as dogs, rodents or even birds inside the compound (visitors are not allowed to bring their dogs on the tour) and the distortion of magnetically calibrated measurement devices such as compasses or even GPS devices. (2)

Some speculate that cones of metal were secretly brought here and buried in our earth as guidance systems for alien spacecraft. Some think that it is in fact the spacecraft itself buried deep within the ground. Other theories include carbon dioxide permeating from the earth, a hole in the ozone layer, a magma vortex, the highest dielectric bio cosmic radiation known anywhere in the world, and radiesthesia. Whatever the cause is, it remains a mystery. (1)

Why) If you do a little internet research on the Mystery Spot you will discover the rational explanations to explain the optical illusions that you will experience while you are there.  All I can offer to counter this are the personal experiences of Pam and myself.  I went on the tour and when I got to the shack at the center of the Mystery Spot gravity felt different to me.  Instead of paying close attention to the tour guide, I walked back and forth over the line where gravity seemed to change and all I can tell you was that my feeling changed consistently depending on where I was standing.

As for Pam, let's just say that in this regard, she is more similar to a dog than a human being.  Pam experienced a strong negative emotional reaction that started in the parking lot and did not allow her to get any closer to the Mystery spot then the gift shop.  In the context of the strange things that Pam and I have experienced over the last few years, this was one of the most interesting.

I got this brochure while I was there.  You don't need to read it.  Just look at the pictures.

The Mystery Spot begins just behind that turnstile.

Pam got me this lovely Entada gigas seed (3), (known as the Cœur de la Mer (4)) while waiting uncomfortably in the gift shop.
