What) Renowned across the United States, Santa Maria Style Barbecue originated near Santa Maria, California during cattle round-ups at ranches. The ranch owner would treat his helpers (usually his neighbors, friends and family) to a barbecue dinner as a sign of his gratitude for a hard day's work. Today, Santa Maria Style Barbecue consists of top block sirloin seasoned with salt, pepper and garlic and cooked slowly over native red oak wood coals. The main course is served with tossed salad, beans, salsa, barbequed bread and sometimes macaroni & cheese.

Where) Or, for a little less history in the location but a bit more adventure in the menu selections, visit the The Hitching Post #2 in Buellton (made famous in the movie Sideways)! The Hitching Post #2 is just off California State Highway 101 in Buellton, California. Take Highway 101 to the Lompoc/Solvang exit. Travel east towards Solvang for 1 1/2 miles. We're on the right side of Highway 246. (1)

What) Few restaurants in the United States have been so warmly accepted over the years as the far-famed "Pea Soup Andersen's" in the little town of Buellton, California. What magic has attracted millions of people to its tables? Why do travelers, who have once visited Andersen's make a point of returning, though they must drive miles after hunger begs them to stop? The delicious Split Pea Soup? Yes, but it's much more than that, for Pea Soup Andersen's has a spirit of wholesome family warmth which draws people again and again through its doors. (2)

Where) 376 Avenue of the Flags    1-805-688-5581

Why) It was lunch time and we were hungry.  The Hitching Post was closed so when I saw Pea Soup Andersen's in Pam's GPS, I knew that was the place to have lunch.  I ordered the “all you can eat Pea Soup” for $9.99.

That's me (not my brother) at the Hitching Post.

Did I forget to mention that my long lost brother is a pea soup chef in the restaurant?  He's on the right and I don't really like him.
